Mary Frankie Forte retired from Chevron after being a manager in Information Technology for 30 years. Mary decided to pursue her entrepreneurial passion and go into business for herself.

In 2005, Mary opened up It's A Grind coffee house at the corner of 11th and Clay streets in downtown Oakland.

During their recent fifth year anniversay celebration on April 2, 2010, many of Mary's loyal and regular customers poured out cups of praise for Forte's ability to survive this critical milestone.

"This is a wonderful feeling and major milestone when you look at the businesses struggling to survive in Oakland in this economy" said Janet Hall, a family friend and Forte's former co-worked at Chevron.

Mary met customers at the door during the celebration with samples of their featured drinks, free coffee, cake and cookies. On hand were her daughter, Rita, a shift manager at the store and her son and daughter-in law, Mark and Tamara, who work in various capacities at the store.
